SUTTER CREEK, Calif. — The stadium lights blazed onto the brand new turf and the varsity football players braced themselves for the struggles and triumphs of the game ahead.

Then, just moments before the match between Amador High, a mostly white school perched in the foothills southeast of Sacramento, and Rosemont High, a largely Black and Latino school tucked into the city's industrial eastern fringe, Amador officials abruptly called it off. Everyone would have to leave. And to make sure they departed safely, the police department in the bucolic tourist town of Sutter Creek had called in reinforcements from the Amador County sheriff's department and other agencies.

President Joe Biden’s executive action pardoning Americans with federal convictions for simple marijuana possession will benefit thousands of people by making it easier for them to find housing, get a job or apply to college. However, it does nothing to help the hundreds of thousands of mostly Black and Hispanic Americans still burdened by state convictions for marijuana-related offenses. That's why advocates for reforming the nation’s drug laws are hopeful that Biden’s pardons lead state lawmakers to pardon and expunge minor drug offenses from people’s records. After all, they say, dozens of states have already decriminalized cannabis and legalized it for a multibillion-dollar recreational and medicinal use industry that is predominantly white-owned.

An Oregon man known as the “jogger rapist” is set to be released from prison in mid-December after serving nearly 36 years behind bars, almost all of his sentence. Richard Gillmore admitted to raping nine girls in the Portland area in the 1970s and 80s but was only convicted in one case because of the statute of limitations. Gillmore was called the “jogger rapist” because he staked out victims as he ran by their homes. KOIN, which first reported his release, said he will remain under supervision until 2034. The Oregonian reports that he will be released as a low-level sex offender, angering some of his victims, who believe he should receive a higher level sex offender classification.

Dimitri Payet’s milestone goal couldn’t stop Marseille losing its unbeaten record in the French league to lowly Ajaccio by 2-1. The French playmaker notched his 100th league goal with the opener from the penalty spot in the 15th minute after Ajaccio defender Cedric Avinel handled the ball. Payet has found the net in Ligue 1 previously with Nantes, Saint-Etienne and Lille. He's also the first current player to have at least 100 goals and 100 assists in the league. But Ajaccio ruined Payet’s party.

Jason Bean took over at quarterback to start the second half for Kansas after Jalon Daniels left the 19th-ranked Jayhawks’ game against No. 17 TCU with an apparent injury to his right shoulder. Daniels was hurt as Jamoi Hodge sacked him with 41 seconds left in the first half. He went to the locker room for treatment on his throwing shoulder. He was on the sideline in street clothes in the second half with his right arm in a sling. Bean threw touchdown passes on two of the Jayhawks' first two series of the second half to take a 17-10 lead.

A fire that ripped through significant parts of Chile's Easter Island this week has caused what authorities say is permanent damage to some of its iconic carved stone figures known as moai. The high temperature of the forest fire accelerated the process through which the stone carvings will eventually turn into sand, according to the mayor of the island locally known as Rapa Nui. Mayor Pedro Edmunds Paoa says the damage is “irreparable and immeasurable as well.” The Chilean island that lies in the middle of the Pacific Ocean has some 800 moais, half of which are inside the Rano Raraku volcano.

Brahim Díaz scored a stunning solo goal to help defending champion AC Milan beat Juventus 2-0 in Serie A. Díaz made his mark nine minutes after the break when he netted after racing forward from inside his own half. Fikayo Tomori had given Milan the lead on the stroke of halftime with only his second league goal for the club. Milan moved level on points at the top of the table with Atalanta and Napoli. They play on Sunday. Juventus slipped to eighth after Inter Milan beat Sassuolo 2-1. Edin Džeko scored twice in that game to take his tally to 101 Serie A goals.

Police arrested 32-year-old Yoni Barrios after a short chase blocks from where they say he attacked four showgirls Thursday and ended up stabbing eight people. Prosecutors say he’ll be charged with two counts of murder and six counts of attempted murder. One of the showgirls who's been released from the hospital told KLAS-TV she couldn't believe what was happening. She says she started running and yelling, “He has a knife!"

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff says the launch was made early Sunday but gave no further details like how far the weapon flew. Justin Verlander will start Game 1 of the American League Division Series for the Houston Astros. It was a forgone conclusion that the AL Cy Young Award frontrunner would start that game, but manager Dusty Baker made it official Saturday. He said they hadn’t yet set their rotation past their playoff opener because they don’t yet know the opponent.

Drivers have complained all season they feel the force from routine crashes more than before.

Florida documents show officials began planning to transport migrants to other states in July and told potential contractors their task would be to relocate them on a voluntary basis. The documents released Friday night to The Associated Press and other news organizations provide new details about the program that culminated in the Sept. 14 flight of 48 mostly Venezuelan migrants from San Antonio, Texas to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. The flight has spawned an investigation by a Texas sheriff and two lawsuits amid criticism that the program was a political stunt by Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis to appeal to his conservative base.

Hoosiers coach Tom Allen walked across the field to see Hart, who previously served on Indiana's coaching staff.

Bournemouth’s prospective new owner Bill Foley watched from the stands as the club mounted a second-half comeback to beat struggling Leicester 2-1 in the English Premier League. The American businessman is reportedly close to completing a 120 million pound takeover from owner Maxim Denim and was on hand at Vitality Stadium to watch quickfire goals from Philip Billing and Ryan Christie seal the win. Leicester forward Patson Daka looked set to spoil the occasion for the south-coast side by giving the Foxes a 10th-minute lead. But Brendan Rodgers’ team paid a heavy price for a string of defensive errors as it missed a chance to move out of the relegation zone.

Russian authorities on Friday declared a popular rapper and writer, as well as one of Russia's most prominent feminists, to be “foreign agents”, a legal designation widely seen as part of the Kremlin's efforts to stifle critical voices. Oxxxymiron, a dual Russian-British national whose real name is Miron Fyodorov, was added to the register alongside science-fiction author Dmitry Glukhovsky and Alyona Popova, who has headed the Russian campaign for legislation to protect victims of domestic violence. Both Fyodorov and Glyukhovsky have voiced strong opposition to Moscow's ongoing war in Ukraine, with a Moscow court in June ordering Glukhovsky's arrest in absentia on the charge of “discrediting the Russian army.”

She says the U.S. Center for SafeSport and other authorities have been made aware of the new reports.

Montenegro is highly a conservative and male-dominated society and initial pride marches here were marred with violence. As the country seeks European Union membership, authorities have backed pride events in recent years and approved same-sex partnerships in 2020.

Oleksandra Matviychuk at a press conference on Saturday in Kyiv said she does not see the Nobel prize “as a Soviet narrative about brotherhood nations.” She said it is "about fighting against a common enemy.” Matviychuk’s comments came a day after many in Ukraine voiced mixed reactions to the Nobel Committee’s decision to award the prize to her organization along with imprisoned Belarus activist Ales Bialiatski and Russian group, Memorial.
