Anson Boon got so into playing Johnny Rotten that he hurt himself rocking too hard.

“If you look at frontmen, they hold the microphone and they stand still. It’s beautiful. It’s great. But Johnny Rotten never stood still. He never retreated from the audience,” the British actor, who plays the Sex Pistols’ foul-mouthed, foul-teethed lead singer in FX’s miniseries “Pistol,” told the Daily News.

Yankees ace Gerrit Cole has pitched six perfect innings against the Detroit Tigers a night after teammate Jameson Taillon lost a bid in the eighth. Cole has eight strikeouts on 86 pitches, half of them looking. His season high is 114 pitches. There have been 23 perfect games in major league history, including two before 1900. The most recent was thrown by Félix Hernández for the Seattle Mariners against Tampa Bay on Aug. 15, 2012 — the last of three that season. Leadoff man Willi Castro hit a routine fly to right starting the game at 87.3 mph, and that remains the hardest-hit ball for hapless Detroit all night.

Jin Young Ko never seems to stress. Nor does she let up. The world’s No. 1 player vaulted into contention for a third major championship Friday, playing the final five holes in 3 under to pull within three shots of second-round Minjee Lee and Mina Harigae at the U.S. Women’s Open. Harigae and Lee were at 9-under 133 at Pine Needles. Lee shot a 5-under 66, and Harigae had a 69. Three-time major champion Anna Nordqvist and Hye-Jin Choi, who shot a 64 to come within a shot of matching the lowest round in the event’s history, were 7 under. Ko was tied for fifth at 6 under with amateur Ingrid Lindblad. Ko shot 67, and Lindblad had a 71.

PITTSBURGH, June 3, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Steelworkers (USW) today said that members ratified a new, five-year agreement with Ardagh Metal Packaging covering about 500 workers at the company's facilities in Chicago; Whitehouse, Ohio; Winston-Salem, N.C.; and Bishopville, S.C.

Two men who sued saying they were forced out of their jobs at a Southern California utility after complaining about sexual and racial harassment have been awarded $440 million in punitive damages. A Los Angeles County jury awarded the punitive damages Thursday, on top of $24.6 million in compensatory damages won by Alfredo Martinez and Justin Page on Wednesday. The men sued electricity supplier SoCal Edison and its parent, Edison International. Both men said they suffered retaliation after reporting harassment. The companies say the jury decision is not consistent with the facts and they will seek a new trial.

An animal-welfare organization in Hawaii reportedly worries troops stationed at the Schofield Army Barracks in Hawaii could be linked to cats who have been found shot with blow darts, and in a couple of cases, mutilated.

Given how much he enjoys fantasy football, it shouldn’t be surprising that Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi had a lot of thoughts about the slap heard around the baseball world.

A woman testified that she was 14 when Bill Cosby took her into a trailer on a movie set in 1975, grabbed her so she couldn’t move her arms, and kissed her. The woman, now 61, says she was shocked and struggled to get away from Cosby. Her testimony Friday in a lawsuit filed by another woman is the first time she has told the story in a public venue. Judy Huth is suing Cosby, alleging he sexually assaulted her at the Playboy Mansion in 1975 when she was 16. Cosby, who is not attending the trial, denies the allegations.

MIAMI — Moms, teachers, students and gun control advocates gathered outside Sen. Marco Rubio’s office on Friday for gun violence awareness day.

A lawyer for the Arizona Republican Party is urging a judge to invalidate Arizona’s overwhelmingly popular system of mail-in voting. Attorney Alex Kolodin argued in Superior Court in Kingman on Friday that voting by mail is inconsistent with the Arizona constitution’s requirement for a secret ballot. Lawyers for state and county election officials as well as the Arizona Democratic Party said the vote-by-mail laws have plenty of secrecy safeguards built in and nothing in the state constitution prohibits the Legislature from allowing citizens to vote that way. Mohave County Superior Court Judge Lee Jantzen said he hopes to issue a ruling by noon on Monday.

WASHINGTON — Facing a likely challenge in the Republican primary for saying he would support some gun control proposals, New York Rep. Chris Jacobs said Friday he would not seek reelection for a second full term.

NEW YORK — The trial of a Steve Bannon associate accused of stealing donations from a fund to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border has been thrown into chaos by a juror claiming the case is a government “witch hunt” and that his fellow jurors are biased New York liberals.

A south Georgia man has been indicted on new charges after a jury last month acquitted him of murdering a teacher in 2005. Ryan Duke was acquitted of more serious charges but convicted of concealing the death of onetime beauty queen Tara Grinstead. Duke told jurors his friend, Bo Dukes, actually killed Grinstead. Now grand jurors in neighboring Ben Hill County have indicted Duke on concealment and evidence tampering charges building off his testimony at trial. Bone fragments were found in Ben Hill County where the men say they burned Grinstead's body. Dukes was found guilty in 2019 of covering up Grinstead's death. He also faces additional Ben Hill County charges issued earlier.

Top-eight national seeds Stanford, Texas A&M and East Carolina had easy wins on their home fields in NCAA baseball regional openers. Conference USA pitcher of the year Tanner Hall pitched four-hit ball over eight shutout innings in Southern Mississippi’s 2-0 victory over Army. Campbell went deep four times in a 15-8 win over Georgia Tech. The Camels have homered in 20 straight games.

LOS ANGELES — It already has been quite a year for Sean McVay.

Arizona men’s basketball coach Tommy Lloyd will get a $1 million raise next season in a proposed five-year contract extension through 2027 following a successful first season in Tucson. The extension must be approved by the Arizona Board of Regents next Thursday. The new contract would raise Lloyd’s base salary from $1.9 million to $2.9 million in 2022-23. California prosecutors say the leader of the Mexican megachurch La Luz del Mundo has pleaded guilty to sexually abusing three girls. Naasón Joaquín García pleaded guilty Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court to sexual acts with three of his followers who were minors at the time. The California attorney general's office says he used his spiritual influence to have sex with several female followers. Garcia has been in jail since 2019 and had vehemently denied the charges. He was scheduled to go on trial Monday on charges that included human trafficking and child rape.

Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes says Minnesota Twins broadcaster Jim Kaat reached out and apologized after referring to New York’s breakout pitching star as “Nestor the Molester” during a broadcast Thursday night. Cortes says the 83-year-old Hall of Fame pitcher didn't need to apologize, and he understood that “we all make mistakes.” Cortes says he didn't think Kaat had any malice in the remark. Kaat was explaining that Cortes had become one of his favorite pitchers during the telecast of a game between Minnesota and Detroit when he used the offensive nickname.

An open-records case has led to rare agreement between the Kentucky Democratic Party and Republican Attorney General Daniel Cameron. Cameron’s office says the state agriculture department violated Kentucky’s open records law by failing to respond to a request for records from the Democratic Party. The agriculture department is run by Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles. He formally entered the governor's race this week. His campaign rivals include Cameron. The Democratic Party is a frequent critic of Quarles and Cameron. Both want to unseat Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear. But on Friday, the Democratic Party was touting the AG’s opinion and slamming Quarles.

He admitted that he shot 21-year-old Andre Montgomery Jr. in March 2016 in exchange for $5,000. Montgomery appeared in the OWN television show “Welcome to Sweetie Pie's,” which was set in a business founded by his grandmother, Robbie Montgomery. In his plea deal, he said two other people already charged in Andre Montgomery's death participated in the murder-for-hire plot.

Wisconsin's attorney general says a man was fatally shot at his home in Wisconsin and a suspect was discovered in the basement with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in what may have been a plan targeting people connected to the judicial system. During a news conference, Attorney General Josh Kaul refused to name the victim or the suspect, but said the shooting Friday morning in New Lisbon appeared to be a “targeted act” and that the gunman had selected targets who were “part of the judicial system.” Kaul says investigators don’t believe any one else is at risk any longer, but that an investigation involving the FBI and the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation is ongoing.

California is spending $11 million on education programs promoting wider use of “red flag” laws that are designed to temporarily take guns away from people who are deemed at risk of harming themselves or others. The money was included in the state budget approved nearly a year ago, but the programs are now getting underway. Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the funding on Friday, which is National Gun Violence Awareness Day. He also continued promoting California’s gun control efforts as a national model in response to recent mass shootings, including in Tulsa, Oklahoma; Uvalde, Texas; and Buffalo, New York.

Two candidates for Michigan governor have lost their final appeals and will remain off the ballot in the Republican primary. The state Supreme Court was the last stop for Perry Johnson and Michael Markey. They were doomed by forged signatures on their petitions, apparently created by paid circulators without knowledge of the candidates. After state officials scratched those signatures, the candidates didn’t have enough valid ones to reach the threshold of 15,000. Detroit’s former police chief, James Craig, is in the same category. But the Supreme Court told him to take his appeal first to the Michigan appeals court. Craig, too, is likely to remain off the ballot.

Former Brazil defender Alex says he has undergone heart bypass surgery after four blocked arteries were discovered. The 39-year-old retired from soccer in 2016 after a long and successful career playing for Chelsea, PSV Eindhoven, Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan. Alex’ former club Santos posted on its social media channels a video of the former defender at a hospital in an undisclosed location while he recovers. The Champions League winner with Chelsea in 2012 says he had just left the intensive care unit and will remain at the hospital for another six days.

Block-by-block fighting is raging in two key eastern Ukrainian cities on the 100th day of Russia’s war, grinding them to rubble. The governor of the Luhansk region says that fierce battles continue in Sievierodonetsk and that the Russians continue to pummel neighboring Lysychansk. Those are the only two cities in eastern Ukraine’s Luhansk province not controlled by Russian forces or Moscow-backed separatists. The Russians have been trying to encircle them.

Skyler Messinger went 4 for 5 with three RBIs, Austin Todd added three RBIs and No. 9 overall seed Texas beat Air Force 11-3 in the Austin Regional. Former hedge fund CEO David McCormick is conceding the Republican primary in Pennsylvania for U.S. Senate to celebrity heart surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz. McCormick ended his campaign Friday night as he acknowledged an ongoing statewide recount wouldn’t give him enough votes to make up the deficit. Before the recount, Oz led McCormick by 972 votes out of 1.34 million votes counted in the May 17 primary. The Associated Press will not declare a winner in the race until the recount is complete. Friday’s development sets up a general election between Oz, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump, and Democrat John Fetterman in what is expected to be one of the nation’s premier Senate contests.
